Does Allulose Help with Weight Loss?

When it comes to sweeteners and weight loss, most people immediately think about aspartame or saccharin. However, a newer alternative has entered the health market with a taste and texture similar to sugar. That sweetener is allulose.

This natural sweetener is not just for sweetening coffees and pastries. According to studies, allulose may also help with weight loss. How?

That’s one of the questions we’ll answer below as we discuss the benefits of allulose for weight loss and look closer at this natural sweetener.

Understanding Allulose

Allulose (D-psicose) is a rare sugar found naturally in foods like figs, raisins, molasses, brown sugar, and wheat. Manufacturers can also produce it commercially from fructose, a form of sugar in fruits.

What’s interesting about allulose is that it has a similar chemical formula to fructose. However, the chemical components in allulose have a different arrangement that prevents the body from processing it the way it would fructose.

People on a weight loss diet who try allulose will notice that this sweetener has 70% of the sweetness of table sugar. Unlike other alternative sweeteners, allulose doesn’t leave a bitter aftertaste in the mouth.

Benefits of Allulose for Weight Loss

Sweeteners and weight loss are a golden combination for people on a diet who have a sweet tooth but still want to enjoy occasional treats.

Recent research on allulose suggests that this natural sweetener may aid in weight loss in several ways. Let’s look closer at each of these.

Curbs Sugar Cravings With Fewer Calories

Overconsumption of calories is the main reason for weight gain and obesity. While allulose is almost as sweet as regular sugar, it has much lower carbs and fewer calories.

When you include allulose in your weight loss diet, your body only absorbs a fraction of the calories. This lower absorption rate is due to the chemical structure of allulose.

Whereas regular sugar gives you four calories per gram, allulose provides only 0.4 calories. Therefore, you can satisfy your sweet tooth while consuming much lower calories.

Enhances Fat Loss

Another benefit of allulose for weight loss is its potential for enhancing fat loss. Studies show allulose has fat-burning abilities and may improve fat loss around the belly area.

A 2018 study examined the effects of allulose on weight loss in 121 adults. Participants in this study consumed either 4-7 grams of allulose or a placebo twice a day for 12 weeks.

Results showed a significant decrease in body fat and mass in the allulose group. They had especially lost a high percentage of abdominal and subcutaneous fat.

Another study evaluating the connection between alternative sweeteners and weight loss showed that feeding the subjects allulose improved energy expenditure and reduced body fat accumulation.

Regulates Blood Sugar

Allulose may also help stabilize blood sugar. This plant-based natural sweetener has a glycemic index of zero. Meanwhile, the glycemic index of regular sugar is 65! This glycemic index means allulose doesn’t cause blood sugar spikes.

Furthermore, studies investigating the effects of allulose on weight loss found that this compound may have blood sugar-lowering properties. A 2010 research found that eating allulose with a meal reduced blood sugar levels significantly within an hour.

Another study showed that allulose can improve insulin sensitivity in rodent subjects with insulin resistance. Allulose has also been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by safeguarding the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

These properties not only make allulose great for weight loss, but they also make it an excellent sweetener for people with diabetes.

Prevents Fatty Liver

Lastly, allulose can help with weight loss by reducing the risk of fatty liver disease. People with this disease can’t metabolize fat properly and develop insulin resistance.

By preventing fatty liver disease, allulose can help you maintain a healthy metabolism, avoid type 2 diabetes, and manage your weight.

A 2015 study showed that allulose reduced fat buildup in the liver of rodent subjects after 15 weeks of supplementation. Another animal study showed that allulose improved liver health by lowering the hepatic levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

A 2020 study examined the connection between allulose sweeteners and weight loss in human subjects. Scientists studied the effects of allulose on weight loss in 90 participants. After 48 weeks of taking allulose, they had improved fatty liver scores.

Is Allulose Safe for Weight Loss?

Studies show that allulose is safe to consume with little to no side effects. You can use it to sweeten your drinks, dressings, and desserts. However, like all other ingredients, you must use it in moderation.

In previous studies, 1-3 teaspoons of allulose were safe to consume daily. Overconsumption may lead to temporary side effects such as:

  • Gas
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea

Note that it’s always possible for individuals to have food sensitivities. If you notice any signs of allergies, contact your doctor immediately.

How to Incorporate Allulose Into Your Weight Loss Plan

You can easily incorporate allulose and natural sweeteners into your weight loss plan. Pure allulose is a keto-friendly natural sweetener you can use in baking and cooking

Allulose caramelizes like regular sugar in baked goods but doesn’t have the bitter aftertaste of other sweeteners. You can use this ingredient to:

  • Make syrup for cocktails
  • Bake cakes and cookies
  • Prepare low-carb jams and jellies
  • Sweeten your morning tea or coffee

There are also a variety of ready-made products containing allulose instead of sugar. High-end chocolates, cereals, snack bars, candies, and salad dressings are some of the foods in this category you can try.
